"Scagliola" is a 15th century technique that probably had its origin in Roman and Greek marble works. The first historical mention of "Scagliola" dates back to the mid 1400's referring to the Italian city of Carpi between Milan and Bologna.

"Scagliola" is a technique of inlaying marble powders and pigments into a routed marble surface producing a look resembling a painting. Various colors of marble can be used for the surface and the designs can range from classic to modern.

Marvelous examples of "Scagliola" can be found in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and the antique technique remains unchanged except for the resin coating applied to the marble surface to protect the work, make it easier to clean, and stain resistant.

Mioni has been successfully reproducing antique "Scagliola" designs for many years in Italy and many of these tables are in very important homes throughout the United States and the world.
